Infant, Toddler, or Preschool: What Your Child Learns at Each Stage

One of the most common questions we hear from parents in South Holland is: "What is my child actually learning at this age?" It's a great question. Children grow in bursts, and what looks like play from the outside is often deep, structured developmental work on the inside. Here's what's happening at each stage — and how our four programs are built around it.
Infant (6 weeks – 15 months): trust and the senses
The infant year is the foundation for everything that comes after. Babies aren't "just" being fed and rocked; they're building attachment, learning that the world is a predictable and responsive place, and doing enormous sensory work — tracking faces, hearing language, learning cause and effect. What good infant care looks like:
- Consistent, warm caregivers who know your baby's routines
- Individualized feeding and sleep schedules (not a class-wide schedule imposed on infants)
- Tummy time, floor play, and safe, varied sensory experiences
- Constant narration — talking to babies grows their brains, full stop
Our Infant program (6 weeks–15 months) is built around exactly this: a safe, loving space where your baby receives individualized care, with a focus on building trust, healthy routines, and early sensory exploration.
Toddlers (15 months – 2 years): language and independence
Toddlers are busy explorers, and their job is to figure out what they can do on their own. This is the stage of first words, first sentences, first "no!"s, and the emergence of pretend play. It's also when self-regulation begins — and it takes patient, skilled adults to support it. What good toddler care looks like:
- Language everywhere: songs, books, back-and-forth conversation
- Fine motor work: stacking, scribbling, self-feeding
- Gross motor work: climbing, running, dancing, outdoor play
- Gentle social scaffolding: how to share, how to wait, how to name feelings
Our Toddler program (15 months–2 years) encourages independence, language development, and social skills through hands-on play, music, and movement.
Preschool (3 – 5 years): early academics and creative thinking
Preschoolers are ready for more structure — and they crave it, as long as it's balanced with plenty of choice and creative play. This is when early literacy, number sense, and problem-solving take off. Kindergarten readiness isn't about knowing how to read; it's about being able to focus on a task, follow multi-step directions, cooperate with peers, and feel confident in a group. What good preschool looks like:
- Circle time with letters, numbers, calendar, and stories
- Learning centers: blocks, art, dramatic play, science, writing
- Small-group work that builds early literacy and math
- Outdoor play every day
- A rich, print-filled environment that treats every child as a capable learner
Our Preschool program (3–5 years) balances structured learning and creative play, introducing early literacy, math, and problem-solving while encouraging curiosity, imagination, and teamwork.
Before & After School (5 – 12 years): support beyond the school day
School-age children have a full day at school — the last thing they need is another one after 3 p.m. What they need is a warm, structured, safe place to land, homework support, enrichment they'd never get from a screen, and time to just be a kid with their friends. What good school-age care looks like:
- Homework help from adults who actually check the work
- Enrichment activities: art, STEM, movement
- Real snacks and rest
- Predictable routines and known adults
- Safe transportation
Our Before & After School Care program (5–12 years) provides exactly that — a supportive environment with homework help, enrichment activities, and time to relax with friends. Transportation is provided.
The through-line
Whatever the age, high-quality early learning has the same shape: known, warm adults; predictable routines; developmentally appropriate work; and plenty of play.
