3. Ask about ratios and group sizes

4. Ask what the day actually looks like

Vague answers ("we just play and learn!") are a yellow flag. Ask for a full tour, not just the lobby. Look at bathrooms, the kitchen, the outdoor play space, the diapering area, the sleeping room. Are surfaces clean? Are toys in good repair? Are the walls covered in the children's actual work, or generic printouts? Is the outdoor space fenced, shaded, and age-appropriate?

6. Ask about staff

Turnover is one of the most underrated factors in a child's experience. Ask how long the lead teachers in your child's room have been at the center, and what continuing education staff receive. Warm, credentialed, tenured teachers are the single best predictor of a happy child.

7. Ask about affordability up front
