Illinois has a state rating system called ExceleRate, and its top tier is the Gold Circle of Quality. Nationally, the standard is NAEYC accreditation, which fewer than 10% of early childhood programs earn. Neither is required to operate, which is exactly why they're useful signals: a center that volunteered for that level of outside scrutiny is telling you something about itself.

When you call around Lansing, ask every center two questions: what's your ExceleRate rating, and are you NAEYC accredited? You'll thin the list fast.

Step 3: match the logistics to your actual life

• Hours: if your shift starts at 7:00 in the Loop, a center that opens at 7:00 in Lansing doesn't work. Look for 6:30 or earlier.
